In the sporting heart of Warsaw, or more precisely on the PGE Narodowy grounds, a new exercise space has appeared that encourages regular activity – the MultiSport outdoor gym. The facility allows the use of professional equipment and is open to adults, regardless of their skill level or training preferences.

– Strong muscles are a key element in staying fit for longer. Training that strengthens them also brings benefits that are helpful in treating various types of ailments. It helps alleviate chronic back pain resulting from a sedentary lifestyle or pain associated with degenerative changes in mature people. Strong muscles also translate into better sports results and a reduced risk of injury in those practising other disciplines – says Bartłomiej Malec, physiotherapist and MultiSport trainer.

According to the MultiSport Index: Sportcrastination report, gym or fitness club activities are among the most popular sports disciplines among physically active Poles – next to cycling and running.

Full spectrum of exercises

Warsaw residents have gained a new training space in the PGE Narodowy grounds with equipment allowing them to exercise the same muscle groups as in fitness clubs. The facility offers over 30 machines and accessories, including a treadmill, elliptical trainer, multi-gym, barbell, punching bag, and rope, with the weights adjustable to suit individual fitness level and individual needs.

– At the beginning, it is worth remembering that after the first strength training with weights we should feel a certain dissatisfaction. It is good to start with a small weight and increase it gradually. It is better to use the facility more often, try new things in small steps and start with lighter weights – says Bartłomiej Malec and explains: – Taking biceps exercises using dumbbells as an example: at the beginning we perform 10 repetitions with a lighter load, e.g. 2.5 kg. If we feel that it does not tire us at all, we do further repetitions with a weight of 5 kg. There is some effort involved, but it is minimal. We try to do a set with a 7.5 kg load and when we feel that after the 10th repetition we have almost run out of strength and we could only do 2–3 more repetitions, we can assume that this is the load we should be working with at that stage.

The MultiSport outdoor gym allows for a full spectrum of exercises. In addition to strength training, also warm-up, mobilisation and stretching. And all this under the open sky.

– Outdoor exercise will further enhance the benefits of regular activity, not only physical, but also mental, such as reducing stress and improving wellbeing. For some, it will diversify their training routine, while for others it may encourage them to start regular activity, also indoors – adds Bartłomiej Malec.

One can get to the MultiSport outdoor gym by metro (line M2, Stadion Narodowy station), bus or tram (Rondo Waszyngtona stop) and SKM or KM train (Warszawa Stadion station). Cyclists can access the area via one of the numerous bike paths, while those travelling by car can use the free outdoor parking.

The gym is available to MultiSport, FitSport and FitProfit card holders (after generating a QR code in the MultiSport and VanityStyle Next applications with confirmed identity) and Zdrofit fitness network passes, as well as after making a cashless payment for a single training session (PLN 19.99). Users can train whenever and however they want without the need to register, make reservations, or set any time limits. The facility is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The MultiSport outdoor gym is the result of a partnership between the largest stadium in Poland and Benefit Systems, the operator of MultiSport sports cards and the owner of such fitness networks as Zdrofit. Although this is a new space in Warsaw, the concept of outdoor gyms is well known. What’s more, some of them have gained cult status. Probably the most famous gym of this type in the world is Muscle Beach in Venice, a district of Los Angeles, where Arnold Schwarzenegger trained. It is estimated that the “Pumping Iron” documentary film, made with his participation in 1977, not only opened the door to fame for the smiling Austrian, but also introduced strength training into mainstream sports and popular culture. In the 1970s, women also began to take advantage of strength training, so the first co-ed gyms appeared.
